Cardinal Krol Center
Residential Services
The Cardinal Krol Center is an Intermediate Care Facility for individuals
with Mental Retardation licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The
Cardinal Krol Center supports 131 men who reside in the main building or in
three on-campus cottages.
Residential services provide programs that support the growth and development
of each individual maintaining the highest possible quality of life. Every
resident participates in recreational activities. A plethora of professional
services also supports every resident.
In 1999, Special Olympics of
Pennsylvania presented the Cardinal Krol Center with their "Residential /
Community Center of the Year" award.
Recreational Activities
Activities are planned to meet individual needs and interests. Residential
counselors assist/support groups of two to eight individuals. Each group
participates in a variety of recreational activities; i.e.: softball, bowling,
basketball, weight training, cardiovascular activities, swimming, square
dancing, cooking, barbecues, and monthly dance socials. Other activities include
trips to theme parks, sporting and cultural events, Music Therapy, Recreational
Therapy and, Special Olympics. This is not an exhaustive list by any means.
Recreation goes as far as a creative mind can take you. All of the above is
available not only to residents but to the Community.
Professional Services
Our Health Services Department provides preventive health care measures and
quality treatment. A Doctor of Osteopathy, Board Certified in Internal Medicine,
and seven nurses comprise the staff.
The Psychological Services Department has a licensed psychologist and behavior
specialist on staff to provide for evaluation, consultation, therapy, and
program development.
The Social Services Department promotes maximum personal and social
development of each resident, and offers family support.
Qualified Mental Retardation Professionals provide support, supervision and
integration of all aspects of the individuals program plan.
Day Program Services
The Cardinal Krol Center provides day program services for adult men and
women with developmental disabilities. Through the person centered planning
process, individuals are encouraged to develop skills in areas that are of
interest to them. A multifaceted workshop is one component of day program
services. Speech and language services, music, continuing education classes,
arts and crafts, religious instruction, physical education, and psychological
services - all supplement the workshop. Interdisciplinary teams support
individuals in identifying and striving toward their dreams. The team values
each person for his or her individual qualities, and encourages each person to
use his or her skills to his or her fullest potential.
Community Services
Residents participate in two forms of community service: a program in which
they volunteer at local agencies and a supported employment program where they
work at job sites in the community.
Client Volunteer Program
The Client Volunteer Program provides an environment whereby each individual
has the opportunity to reach their full potential. In giving of oneself to
others who are in need, the men at Cardinal Krol Center have grown in dignity
and respect, not only for themselves, but also for those whom they serve. It has
opened their eyes to how good it feels to give rather than receive. They are
developing a greater awareness of the importance of their contribution and role
in the community.
Since its inception the program has grown and continues to expand. Many
residents at Cardinal Krol Center are eager to become a part of this experience.
The men are dedicated and caring volunteers. Staff members reported they have
seen a significant positive change in individuals since being involved in the
Client Volunteer Program.
Currently, thirty-three men are servicing the community. They assist at Harlee
Manor Nursing Home, Sunrise Assisted Living, Little Flower Nursing Home, St.
Francis Country House Nursing Home, Hometown Senior Center, Integrated Health
Services of Broomall, Integrated Health Services of Marple, and Mid-County
Senior Services.
Supported
Employment Program
The Vocational Training Program provides opportunities for our residents to
learn new job skills and secure competitive employment in the community. A
thrift store, wood shop, and a café, provide on-site training for community
supported employment. Cardinal Krol Center staff provide in-house training and
on the job training. Work related classes address areas such as banking,
dependability, personal appearance, appropriate attitudes, punctuality, etc. A
"Worker of the Month" award is given to a worker at the "Job Club" monthly
meetings.
Cardinal Krol Center also established Café a La Carte to provide job training
support and instruction in food service. The Café at present serves the Cardinal
Krol Center, as well as the surrounding offices. They serve breakfast and lunch
from a diversified menu. Café hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. This entrepreneur experience has been a very positive one for
everyone. To see the look of pride within the individuals operating the café is
the true measure of the success of this program.
